Osteoarthritis

loss of articular cartilage
2 bones are rubbing against each other
risk: people with prior injuries, elderly people, obese
symptoms: pain, swelling, limited movement at the joints, hands, knees, hips and spine

Gout

a joint disorder associated w/ a molecule called uric acid
build up of uric acid (crystals) causes inflammation of joints (arthritis)
risk: obesity, family history, alcohol consumption
symptoms: red. hot. stiff joints, toes (lump sticking out)

Rhuematoid arthritis

autoimmune disease of joints. immune system attacking the tissues of joints.
risk: women and middle age.

Bursitis

inflammation of a impacted joint
risk: overuse or injury of joints
symptoms: inflamed, swollen joint
ex: knee or elbow

carpal tunnel syndrome

compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel- often due to the swelling of tendons
risk: wrist injury, arthritis, small hands
symptoms: numbness and tingling in hands and fingers.
ex: thumb and index fingers
