Social class background has a powerful influence on a Childs chance of success in the education system due to many factors.

Children of middle class do better at GCSE, stay longer in full-time education and take majority of university places.

However, private education is not accounted for the class differences within state education.

Therefore sociological research focused on why middle class pupils do better than working class students within the state sector.
